Bethel Presbyterian Church

Bethel is a Black church located in North Philadelphia, PA, serving one of the most marginalized Black communities in the city. The church is located in a densely populated zip code where almost half of the residents live below the federal poverty line, more than half are unemployed, and 68% do not have more than a high school education.
Bethel has a long history of providing a wide range of social services to community surrounding the church. During the pandemic, some of their volunteers noticed the need for more mental health support in the community, especially after the height of the pandemic. This led to their collaboration with our founder, Briana Richardson, in executing a community-based participatory research project funded by The Office of Community Engaged Research and Practice in Temple University’s College of Public Health. The findings of this study informed the adaptation of our signature programming, Self-E Sessions- mental health promotion workshops- which we currently facilitate at the church weekly.
